Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Nembang on Wednesday had directed the home minister to furnish clarification over the use of "excessive force" by the police on demonstrators at Bijulibazaar on Tuesday. Representatives from Dalit communities staged rallies there demanding that their rights be ensured in the new constitution."The government will form a team to investigate into the matter," Gautam said in parliament.
In his clarification, Gautam said police had to use the force as demonstrators pelted stones at them. "Around 12 police personnel including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) were injured during the incident," he said. He also said protestors were released after brief detention.
The home minister also vowed to provide video footages of the incident to the CA secretariat.
However, Nepali Congress leader and CA member Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, who was also injured during the protest, demanded that the government take immediate action against two the DSPs for using "excessive force" on peaceful demonstrators. "We are not satisfied by the home minister's clarification," he said. "The government has to take action against the two DSPs immediately."
