THAKURDWARA (BARDIYA) May 14: Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) living in the buffer zone of Bardiya National Park have shown concern for conservation issue.

Bimala Yogi of Neulapur VDC in the buffer zone, who has been working as an HCHV for 15 years, now leads a recently formed conservation network comprising 33 FCHVs. [break]

Yogi, who well understands that clean environment is a prerequisite for a healthy life, is trying to involve more and more FCHVs in conservation efforts.

The FCHV´s conservation network has been working closely with the national park administration in conservation efforts.

“If we can save forests and kept the surrounding environment clean though the participation of women, our dream of a healthy community would be realized in the true sense,” said Yogi, who had come to visit Bardiya National Park.

“We FCHVs have united to help in the conservation and preservation of forests and wildlife without depending on the government and its agencies,” Yogi added.

FCHVs, whose domain is limited to households, have stepped up to take on conservation tasks, something earlier considered unconventional for them. The newly formed network aims to raise awareness among people and among mothers´ groups formed at VDC ward level.

“Whatever health slogan we chant and however well-informed we are, our health will be good only when we conserve the surrounding environment,” said Tara Adhikari, another FCHV. “We have formed this network to work for the conservation of environment which subsumes wildlife, forests and the land,” said Adhikari adding, “We tend to live longer only when we have a clean and balanced environment.”

According to Ramesh Thapa, assistance conservation officer in the national park, this is the first time women have united to help in conservation efforts.

“FCHVs have come together to help in conservation. This will surely help in the preservation of flora and fauna,” said Thapa. Thapa hoped that gradually all HCHVs working in buffer zone villages would come under the network.
