The booklet is based on the paper presented by the author at the 3rd Annual Lecture organized by Nepal Public Health Foundation on June 30, 2012. The book is a compact gist of the recent developments in the field of non-communicable diseases. Dr Pandey is an expert on the evolution of medical and public health services in modern Nepal. In this booklet, he recounts fascinating stories of how non-communicable diseases were diagnosed and treated in the country starting in the 1940s.[break]
Dr Pandey has also held the positions of Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Vice Chairman of Sahid Gangalal National Heart Centre, Senior Consultant, Physician and Head, Department of Medicine and Cardiology of Bir Hospital, among many other prestigious positions. Also the founder of Mrigendra Samjhana Medical Trust, among many other health associations, he has contributed a lot to the medical field.
In this booklet, the writer has successfully presented his multidimensional views on non-communicable diseases (NCD) which is presently drawing attention in the national and international arena. He brings out the issues of how there is a slow implementation of proper plans on the prevention and control of NCDs.
Though the lecture is on the situation of NCDs in Nepal, Dr Pandey relates it to the global context. He points out how NCDs now account for the largest burden of disease – responsible for up to 80 percent of deaths in low- and middle-income countries. Like most other countries, Nepal is also currently going through an “epidemiological transition” in which NCDs such as heart and kidney diseases, cancer, asthma, diabetes, obesity, stroke as well as mental health problems
are becoming a growing concern.
