KATHMANDU, April 1: Youth leader Suhang Nembang of the CPN-UML sought to contest for the party’s parliamentary party leader, but the party leadership intervened during the process.
Following the intervention of party General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, UML lawmakers refused to stand as proposer or seconder for Suhang.
During the meeting held Wednesday afternoon at the party’s central office in Chyasal, both Suhang and party Vice-Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa had claimed the position of parliamentary party leader. Badal had made his claim in line with the preference of the party leadership.
Three nominations for Speaker of Bagmati
After consensus could not be reached in the meeting, an election committee was formed and the election process was initiated. Badal registered his candidacy with Guru Baral as proposer and Pushpa Kandel as seconder.
However, Suhang failed to secure either a proposer or a seconder. Although Rajendra Rai and Dr Arjun Kumar Karki had initially assured support, sources said General Secretary Pokharel stopped both from backing him.
The election committee had set the deadline for filing nominations until 4 pm. Although Suhang collected the nomination form, he did not submit it after failing to secure a proposer and seconder, leading to Badal being elected unopposed.
