Asian medalists to get cash reward

KATHMANDU, May 6: The 97th board meeting of National Sports Council (NSC) has decided to reward triathlete Rajiv Kumar Gurung with a cash prize of Rs 500,000 for winning gold medal at the ASTC Asian Triathlon Championship held in the Philippines on April 28.



NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama said on Sunday that the meeting has decided to recommend to the council of ministers to provide the amount to Gurung through the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS). Gurung had won gold in sprint discipline in 35-39 years age category of the championship. [break]



The meeting has also decided to recommend cash rewards for the gold, silver and bronze medalists of Asian Pacific Karate Championship. The gold, silver and bronze medalists will be awarded Rs 500,000, Rs 250,000 and Rs 125,000 respectively. Sunil Lama and Ganga Adhikari had won golds during the event held in Hong Kong while four karatekas had won silver and seven had secured bronze medals.



The recommendation was based on the previous board meeting of NSC which has fixed separate amounts of cash prizes for medalists at the world level, Asian level and South Asian level.



Meanwhile, the meeting has also decided to confer the National Sports Medal on eight popular players of the year, two employees of NSC, two coaches and a sports association. Each of the awardees will get Rs 50,000.



Budget

The meeting has also decided to demand a budget of Rs 1.25 billion for the fiscal year 2070/71. Besides that, NSC has demanded Rs 380.8 million for the Seventh National Games to be held later this year. "The amount demanded outside the ceiling will also be utilized for construction of covered halls in 13 districts where there are no covered halls," said Lama, adding, "The amount will also be utilized for construction of one ground each in the sports centers of 165 election constituencies."



Infrastructure development

The meeting has also approved a policy on infrastructure development to help in the development of players. As per the policy, NSC will construct semi-covereds hall in all 240 constituencies. For this, NSC has decided to request the government and neighboring countries for assistance through MoYS.



Regulations for Sports Science Academy

NSC has also decided to approve the regulations for Sports Science Academy. "To produce able manpower we have approved the regulations for Sports Science Academy. We have set a long-term plan of establishing Sports University as well," said Lama, adding that only scientific sports science could help produce qualify performers at the international stage.



Similarly, the meeting has decided to conduct the President´s Shield in a systematic way and also approved regulations for swimming pool.
