In the last four years, 32 women died of pregnancy complication.
According to the District Health Office, Dolakha, there is the District Hospital at Jiri and a primary health centre at Charikot, but the people are habituated to take the sick ones to hospital only after extreme seriousness.
Similarly, some hold the patients despite serious disease in the district hospital for long and refer to the capital city at the very last moment. It is also one of the reasons behind the growing deaths, said Dr Arjun Sapkota, Chief of the District Health Office.
He blames both private hospitals and government system behind the untimely deaths. With this in the background, the primary health centres were being upgraded, so that even surgery service could be provided in the district, added Dr Sapkota.
The locals said it was quite contradictory that government was draining millions of rupees to reduce child maternal deaths, while the district was witnessing growing number of pregnant deaths.
Moreover, the birthing centre at the District Health Office lacks physical facilities and skilled human resources.
Meanwhile, 19 private hospitals in the district are yet to be renewed. Most of them lack skilled human resources and physical amenities. RSS
