BBC News said India reacted angrily to Khan’s detention. This "policy of detention and apology by the US cannot continue," it quoted Indian external minister SM Krishna as saying.
Earlier, the Bollywood star was detained for 90 minutes by US authorities at the White Plains airport in New York.
According to the reports, Khan, who arrived in the airport on a private plane, was on his way to Yale University to attend a function.
The reason for his detention at the airport is not clear.
In a similar incident in 2009, Khan was stopped at the Newark airport and was released two hours later after the Indian embassy intervened.
That time, the actor had said he was detained because he had a Muslim name.
