KATHMANDU: A Seminar on ‘Long Distance Migration and Environmental Changes in Nepal’ began on Friday at Hotel Yellow Pagoda, Jamal. The workshop was hosted by German Nepal Academic Association (NEGAAS), a non-profit organization established by the Nepali academicians trained in Germany, and financially supported by the Germany Academic Association (DAAD).
According to the press statement released by NEGAAS, the prime objective of the workshop was to bring together competent young researchers and experts as well as concerned entrepreneurs in the area of migration-environmental change nexus and promote solution driven dialogue between the concerned stakeholders. The seminar was led by Prof Beatrice Knerr, an expert on Migration from the University of Kassel, Germany.
Dr Bishwa Nath Oli, secretary of the Ministry of Population and Environment, was invited as the chief guest, while Jacqueline Groth, deputy chief of Mission of the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany, was the guest of honour during the opening ceremony of the workshop.

During the event, Master of Ceremony engineer Sandhya Regmi presented highlights of the program and NEGASS activities in brief.
Prof Beatrice, chief resource person of the workshop, expressed her happiness over the opportunity to work in close cooperation with NECAAS for the project that has wide societal relevance. A book titled ‘International Labor Migration and Livelihood Security in Nepal’ was also released at the program.
Meanwhile, Dr Bishwa Nath thanked the German Government for supporting Nepali academic community by providing scholarships to study in Germany. Talking about Nepal’s vulnerability toward climate change and the impact of labour migration on socio-economic sector, he emphasized on the need of global solidarity for tackling environmental issues and migration related problems.
Jacqueline expressed her pleasure to be associated with the NEGAAS workshop. She underlined that such activities are important as these kinds of programs promote the interdisciplinary dialogue among academicians from Nepal and Germany. She further committed continued support to such activities.
The workshop aimed at extracting important guidelines for tackling problems related to migration and associated environmental issues.
