CHITWAN, May 31: Gita Majhi of Khairhani Municipality-10 has died after being severely tortured by her husband. According to the District Police Office, Chitwan, Majhi died last night while undergoing treatment at Bharatpur Hospital.

Her inebriated husband Rachandra Majhi had left her severely injured as he allegedly inserted a stick in her rectum in the course of torturing her on May 26. She breathed her last while undergoing surgery at Bharatpur Hospital on Monday.

According to the information Officer of Bharatpur Hospital, Gopal Poudel, Majhi died after her heart suddenly stopped functioning last night.

Police said that the empty part between Majhi’s genitals and rectum was torn apart as a result of torture. According to Dipendra Neupane, a doctor involved in the treatment, four layers of Gita's genitals were torn apart. He said that Gita would have serious health complications including fistula and intestinal problems even if she had survived.

Police have already arrested her husband on charges of murder and rape. According Spokesperson at the District Police Office, Chitwan, Narhari Adhikari, further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
