Water level subsides in Mahakali, flood victims begin returning home

MAHENDRANAGAR, July 10: As weather conditions improve, flood victims in the district are gradually returning to their homes. By Monday afternoon, over 4,000 individuals from nine municipalities in Kanchanpur had relocated to safer areas due to heavy rainfall.


Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Joshi, spokesperson for the District Police Office, said that as of this morning, 2,077 people have returned to their homes. With the water level in the Mahakali River receding, the Banbasa bridge has been reopened to traffic on Tuesday. Flood victims, whose homes were inundated, had sought refuge in schools, ward offices, public spaces, and with relatives.

In Dodhara Chandani Municipality, hundreds of affected families remain sheltered at Ambika Secondary School. Meanwhile, victims in Bhimdatta Municipality-12 Airi and Ward No. 18 Salghari are staying at the Ward Office Building and Madan Bhandari Basic School, respectively.


Rabindra Devkota, the ward chair of Bhimdatta Municipality-18, said that 130 victims are housed at Madan Bhandari Basic School, 100 at the ward office, and 60 at Mahendranagar Secondary School. According to the district administration office, individuals who had moved elsewhere are returning home as the floodwaters recede in Dodhara Chandani, Beldadi, and Bedkot municipalities.


Tragically, the floods have claimed the lives of four people, including three teenage girls and a seven-month-old baby, with one person still reported missing.
