The incessant rain fall in the hilly districts since the last two months have caused an increase in the water flow, the Water-induced Disaster Prevention Division (WDPD), Biratnagar said. The water flow exceeding 150,000 cusecs per second is considered dangerous for the river.[break]
Despite an increase in the water flow, there is no immediate threat, informed engineer Sunil Jha at the WDPD. Locals around the east embankment of the river have however grown panicky fearing any impending disaster.
Three years ago, there was a huge loss incurred after the water current breached the east embankment and gushed into the settlement area of Kushaha in western parts of Sunsari district.
Though the country’s largest river can withstand a water flow of 950,000 cusecs per seconds, the capacity has hugely diminished, with the embankments to the east bank of the river eroding every year.
