Vibrating the airwaves

KATHMANDU, June 15: We’re enjoying electricity in abundance, and rain too.

But how about the new releases from the international music scene? Not so much; at least, not enough to be spoilt with choices.[break]

However, I’ve selected my picks from the already critically managed playlist. And it’s my pleasure to fill you in with the hottest musical goodies.

Arkansas-based singer/songwriter Cory Lamb is all about intoxicating lyrics with a powerful beat. Lamb specializes in contemporary Rock music with a production sophistication rarely found in today’s emerging artists.

“Break the Cycle” is what his upcoming album is called. And its title track is a punchy dance number that might make you want to compare him with 3Oh!3.

As soon as I caught his music video, English singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf caught my attention.

He’s good looking and at the same time highly talented. He utilizes a wide variety of classical instruments in his music, combining them with electronic sampling. In other words, it gives you that feel of the 90s music.

The single “The City” is a perfect example for this justification. It’s the first one to be taken off his newly released album “Lupercalia”

The American Pop Rock band Allstar Weekend gained popularity from Disney Channel. Yes, just like the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez with whom they’ll soon be touring.

Right now, the guys are high with their current song “Not Your Birthday” which Gomez already has as her mobile phone ringtone! In fact, she admitted that she sometimes ignores calls just to listen to the song… So now you know how good the single is.

I usually don’t trust Gomez’s taste, but since I’ve heard it myself, I give it a positive sign. “Not Your Birthday” is also featured in the new Disney flick “Prom.”

There’s a vast difference between where Jennifer Hudson came from and where she is right now.

But even after all the changes the American Idol participant had to go through, she still remembers her old self.

That’s what the title of her latest record is all about – “I Remember Me.” And good news is, the title track has made its way to the airwaves! The song marks the comeback of the Oscar-winning singer/actress in the music scene after losing a mighty amount of weight – 80 pounds, to be precise, and I can’t help but wonder if the shedding off of fat has affected her vocals.

Honestly, Hudson sounds very different in “I Remember Me” – maybe a little less powerful than before. Check out the single and be the judge of that yourself.

US Rock duo The Black Keys look all set for the promotion of their latest disc “Brothers” which retains their Led Zeppelin influence but has a new kind of shrewdness, too: real songwriting, and real hooks.

And touching bit of Acid Blues is their awesome current single from the album. It’s called “Next Girl”. And if you’re a fan of the genre or the group, here’s a warning. Get ready to get blown away!

Jeremy Fisher is a Canadian singer/songwriter who recently offered the music scene his fourth effort “Flood.” Mark my words, you’ll be amazed to know the assortment of instruments Fisher has used in the album – mandolins, open-tuned 12-strings, tenor guitars, piano, and a huge concert bass drum, among others.

His latest single “Fly Away” is just a piece of the chunk. Nonetheless, listening to it is enough to know and love Jeremy Fisher’s new material!

This week, we have a release from another Canadian star. She’s the ever so rocking punk princess Avril Lavigne! And she gets her rock-on with the second offering from her new album, “Goodbye Lullaby.” “Smile” finds the singer expressing her gratitude to a special person in her life.

Needless to say, Lavigne’s current work is far different from her earlier materials, such as her debut “Let Go.” It’s more positive now, but sometimes, it tends to overdose on the positivism.

It’s the same in the fresh track. Apart from that, “Smile” is a fun cut of Pop Punk music.
