UPDATE: Death toll in Kalikot landslides rises to nine

KALIKOT, July 29: Death toll in two separate incidents of landslides in Kalikot district has risen to nine.

Earlier today, the district authorities said that six members of same family were killed when a house was swept away by landslides that occurred in Naraharinath Rural Municipality-7 of Kalikot district Tuesday night.

According to District Police Office, Kalikot, the incident took place when the house belonging to Gange Budha swept away by the landslides at around 2PM in Banga area.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shyam Babu Oliya said that 65-year-old Gange Budha, his spouse 61-year-old Naina Budha, his daughter-in-law 24-year-old Kusha Budha, his 10-year-old granddaughter Chandrika Biudha, seven-year-old grandson Ram Budha and 18-months-old another grandson Charita Budha lost their lives due to rain-triggered landslides.

"However, four others of the same family survived the landslide tragedy," Oliya said. 

Bimala Budha of the same family who was critically injured in the incident breathed her last while undergoing treatment this afternoon at a local health post in Kumal Gaun. 

Meanwhile, two persons who were reported to have been missing after landslides struck a house in Naraharinath Rural Municipality-4 have been found dead. The dead bodies of the victims have been recovered. The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Bale Budha and his wife 63-year-old Man Budha.

The incessant rainfall has prevented the local authorities from carrying out rescue operations, the rural municipality chairperson Dhiraj Bahadur Shahi said. "Landslide has destroyed properties worth millions," he said. Local Khulalu Bazaar has also been swept away by the landslides.
