SURKHET, Feb 22: The National Pride Project, Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project has completed 40% of the construction work. The construction project was started from 2004 to divert the water of Bheri River to Babai and provide irrigation facility to 52,000 hectares of land of Banke and Bardiya districts and also produce 48-megawatt electricity. The construction of the 12.2 kilometers long tunnel was constructed with the use of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the first time in Nepal. Under the second package of the project, the dam and powerhouse will be constructed.
SURKHET, Feb 22: Kabi Ram Nepali, a resident of Mohanyal Rural Municipality-3 of Kailali district, is a high school student. While going to his school, Nepali has to cross the Karnali River risking his life. As there is no bridge over the river, students like Nepali have been risking their lives to go to the school regularly. They have been crossing the Karnali River with the help of a wooden boat.
SURKHET, Feb 20: Nepal Rastriya Primary School in western Surkhet that once had around 10 bighas of land of its own is now shrunk to a small plot. While there is not enough space left even for students to play, the earlier open area is now fully occupied by infrastructures, vegetable and crop farms. In 2006, some locals had decided to give the public land they had been using to the school located at Chyurikhet at Panchapuri Municipality–2, making it one of the spacious schools in the district. According to the school's Principal Dil Bahadur Gharti, the school is now struggling to recover the land.
SURKHET, Jan 24: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Friday caught the chairperson of Junichande rural municipality in Jajarkot district Krishna Bahadur KC red-handed with Rs 800,000 bribe money.
SURKHET, Jan 19: On May 29, 2015 an agreement was signed between the Municipal Development Committee, Surkhet and Sushil Raj Sharma, to lease out one and half katha land and a house for 10 years with monthly rent of Rs 20,000. According to the committee officials, Sharma has so far paid only Rs 340,000 whereas his outstanding dues stand at Rs 780,000.
SURKHET, Jan 18: ‘Bank account for daughters - lifelong security’, a much lauded initiative of Karnali Province, has now gone into implementation, with the provincial government releasing the required funds. In the first phase of the program, the government has transferred a total of Rs 38.4 million to the local levels. The social development ministry dispatched the money to 79 local level entities.
SURKHET, Jan 16: Once a beautiful lake covering an area of 12 hectares in the middle of a dense jungle, Baraha Lake of Surkhet has turned into a pasture after drying up. Provincial government of Karnali has prepared a master plan to restore the lost glory of the lake.

SURKHET, Dec 4: After seven months of construction of a tunnel, Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project has finally laid the foundation stone for construction of the dam and the powerhouse of a hydropower project to be built under second package of the national pride project.
SURKHET, Nov 22: Police have arrested a person on the charge of being involved in fraud impersonating police officer in Surkhet. The arrestee was found being involved in smuggling of motorcycles impersonating police officer.
SURKHET, Nov 20: After Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, chief minister of Karnali Province, was pressurized to bring about some changes in the work procedure to support the crusher industry, the Karnali government is preparing to amend the work procedure – which will support the crusher plant which are being operated illegally in the region.
SURKHET, Nov 13: There appears to be a dispute between the Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project and the Bheriganga Municipality where the national pride project is situated. The dispute is related to taking permission to use local natural resources, paying revenues, and distributing compensation to the affected locals.
SURKHET, Oct 26: Sixty-one-year old Bhim Bahadur Budha of Dharepani is on cloud nine after his village got access to road network. The locals do not have to walk for over five hours carrying heavy loads any more to reach the market place in Bhotechour. Earlier, he used to visit the market twice or thrice a week carrying heavy loads of fruits and vegetables.
