UNMIN hails govt move

KATHMANDU, July 17: The United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) has welcomed the government´s decision to formally start the process for discharge and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants disqualified during the verification process.



A press statement issued by UNMIN on Friday said the UNMIN and the United Nations Country Team "welcome the decision by the Government of Nepal and the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) to formally launch on July 17 the discharge and rehabilitation process for 4,008 Maoist army personnel, including 2,973 minors, who were disqualified during the verification process."



The statement said that the initiative "marks a significant milestone in the peace process." The UNMIN has further said that it will be important that the UCPN-M "cooperates with the government to ensure the successful completion of the discharge and rehabilitation program."



The statement also reiterated the UN´s commitment to provide "support and assistance" to the peace process.
