Claiming that the current government cannot accomplish the task of writing the new constitution and conclude the peace process, Khanal urged Nepali Congress (NC) and other parties to take the initiative to form a national consensus government.
He criticized the government for recommending amnesty to lawmaker Balkrishna Dhungel, who has been convicted of murder, and termed the move as irresponsible.
“This is an extreme example of encouraging impunity. This decision needs to be corrected.” Chairman Khanal refuted Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar´s claim that the decision to recommend amnesty for Dhungel was initially taken by his government.
“The proposal to seek amnesty for lawmaker Dhungel was made during my tenure but I refused to forward it.”

In the meantime, Vice-chairman of CPN-UML Bamdev Gautam too claimed that the new consensus government will be formed under the leadership of Nepali Congress.
Speaking at press conference organized in Dhangadi, Gautam stressed that NC should be given the chance for leading a consensus government as both UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML have already led the government twice.
Speaking about the current government, he said that the government formed on the basis of four-point deal won´t succeed.
