SARLAHI, June 11: Two women have been allegedly killed in the name of dowry in Farhadwa-3 and Lakshmipur-6 of Haripur Municipality in Sarlahi district.

Abdul Shah Fakir of Pharhadawa allegedly murdered his spouse Ida Khatun in her early twenties, accusing her of not meeting his expectation for a dowry, Chief of District Police Office, Sarlahi SP Naresh Raj Subedi said.

Phakir was reportedly torturing her mentally, emotionally and physically for not convincing her parents to give him cash of Rs 100,000. Following his torture, Ida went to her parents' home and returned home after sometime after the two families sat for discussions, according to police.

Ida's father Mansur Shah said Abdul and his family were torturing his daughter time and again as they failed to meet their monetary demand. As he said, Ida's five-year-old son reported to his grandfather that his mother was killed by the family.

He noticed during his observation that Ida's body had residues of mud and a piece of cloth put into her mouth. He claimed that his daughter was first beaten to death and was hanged to show that she had committed suicide.

Police have arrested two persons on the charge of their involvement in the crime, while the body of Ida has been kept at the Provincial Hospital, Sarlahi for post-mortem.

Similarly, the body of Indrakala Devi Shah of around 45 years of age was seized by police from a cremation pyre over suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. It is said that Indrakala's husband Rajaram Shah had beaten her black and blue, leaving her severely injured for not meeting his dowry expectation. The family deliberately chose not to take her to hospital for treatment. Police investigation has revealed that she breathed her last after some time.

DSP Dipendra Panjiyar, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Sarlahi, said the police intercepted when Indrakala's dead body was being cremated, taking control over it after getting the information that the body was being cremated at the local Lakhandehi river.

Panjiyar said, “The body was recovered from the burning pyre in the Lakhandehi River on the border of Lalbandi and Hariwan, and the half-burnt body was recovered and sent to the Provincial Hospital Sarlahi for post-mortem.”

Indrakala's husband Rajaram has been absconding since the day of the incident. The police have arrested six people, who helped to set fire on the deceased body without completing the legal process.
