KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Two workers -- Ashok Gurung, 40, and Sajan Gurung, 26 -- died of asphyxiation while digging a well in the property of one Madan Basnet in Gyaneshwar of Kathmandu on Tuesday.

According to the police, the workers originally from Aamruwa VDC-5, Morang and currently residing in Sukedhara, are believed to have died due to asphyxiation. According to Inspector Kiran Jung Kunwar, the two had begun digging the wells in the morning at 11 am and they were found dead at around 3 pm.[break]

Ashok asked for some help from the bottom of the 40-42 feet deep well when assistant laborer Sajan climbed down the well, said Bikash Gurung, 12-year-old son of Ashok.

The well had been dug about a week ago and the workers had been called for its maintenance.

According to Basnet, the landowner, they had entered the well to remove silt. He told the police that it was too late to rescue the workers when they reached the spot to take them out of the well.

A team of Nepal Army and Nepal Police recovered the bodies at around 4:15 pm.

Inspector Kunwar said, “The workers might have died due to lack of oxygen.”
