A special squad of Narcotics Drug Control Law Enforcement Unit (NDCLEU) arrested Manoj Mahato, 26, on March 14 with 150 grams of brown sugar while Rajendra Prasad Yadav, 60, was found in possession of 500 grams of drug on March 17. [break]
Both Mahato and Yadav, who were carrying the illicit drug from Birgunj to Kathmandu were arrested from Balkhu, according to the police.
If convicted, the two are likely to face more than 20 years of imprisonment.
The initial investigation has revealed that both Yadav and Mahato had been working for an Indian drug supplier.
“It has been revealed that Yadav had been smuggling drugs from Birgunj to Kathmandu since a long period,” said SSP Nawa Raj Silwal, deputy chief at NDCLEU.
Yadav, 60, who originally hails from Bishrampur V.D.C of Bara district, had already served 10 years at Central Jail. He, however, started smuggling drugs again soon after being released from jail. A team from Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka had arrested Yadav in 1995 while trying to smuggle a large quantity of brown sugar.
However, Mahato, 26, an Indian citizen, doesn´t have long historical records of illegal drug smuggling, according to police. The arrest of Mahato led police to Yadav.
The duo were made public amid a press conference organized at NDCLEU on Sunday.
The price of the confiscated drug -- 650 gram brown sugar -- is valued at around Rs 2.6 million in the illegal market.
