KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Republican Donald Trump is leading in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, surpassing his performance in the 2020 election, but key battleground states are still undecided, leaving the outcome of the election uncertain.
Trump, aiming to become the first former president in over a century to return to the White House, has secured 211 Electoral College votes, while his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, has garnered 153, with roughly one-third of the votes counted, according to foreign news agencies.
Despite Trump holding leads in crucial states like Georgia and North Carolina, Harris’ clearest path to victory lies through the "Blue Wall" states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. To win the presidency, a candidate needs 270 of the 538 Electoral College votes, Reuters reported.
Trump has slight edge on Clinton in several battleground states
While some outlets, such as Decision Desk HQ, have projected Trump as the winner in Georgia and North Carolina, other media outlets and Edison Research have not yet called these races.
Trump has notably increased his support among Hispanic voters and lower-income households, both of which have been hit hard by rising prices since the last election. Exit polls show Trump winning 45% of Hispanic voters nationwide, up 13 percentage points from 2020, while Harris leads with 53%.
As the race narrows to key swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—markets have begun reacting, with currency and bond markets appearing to anticipate a Trump victory.
The final result hinges on the outcome in these battleground states, with the race still too close to call.
