PALPA, Oct 21: The Syangja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has launched indefinite strike from Thursday bringing business activities to a halt in the district.

The business body announced the strike when some businessmen were injured in a police baton charge following disputes between locals and police personnel on Wednesday at Putali Bazaar, the district headquarters of Syangja.[break]

Lal Prasad Shrestha, the chamber vice president said the chamber has called for indefinite closure of markets in protest of police excesses. “Business activities in the district have halted because police beat up traders and treated them badly for no apparent reason,” he told Republica.

The dispute in Putali Bazaar had begun after some drunken youths attempted to close down shops forcefully on Wednesday night. "Instead of taking actions against the miscreants, the police baton-charged against traders," said Shrestha.

Protesting the police action, locals also staged a sit-in protest in front of the local police office on Thursday.

Meanwhile, dialogue between the youths, local administration and SCCI failed to reach understanding on Thursday. "A 21-member committee has been formed to resolve the dispute," said Shrestha.
