A joint team from Kathmandu District Court and Nepal police had nabbed Tiwadewala from Kavre District while he was busy planting coffee saplings at Battiskilo, near Panchkhal.
Tibadewala was produced before Kathmandu District Court Friday. Court officials asked him to pay Rs 130 million. But Tiwadewala said that he was unable to pay the amount. “I would have run a business in India if I had such a big amount” Chitra Bahadur KC, the officer executing the court judgement, quoted him to myrepublica.com as saying.
Court officials then asked him to sign the letter prepared to send him to jail. Tiwadewala didn´t refuse to sign the letter. After that, he was sent to jail. Existing law allows the court official to send a convict to jail only for four years.
The government had filed altogether 12 charges against Tiwadewala. Two of them were corruption-related. Kathmandu District Court had issued a verdict some nine years ago convicting him of embezzling Rs 130 million. He was convicted for illegal transactions in foreign currency. The district court verdict was upheld by Patan Appellate court in 2001. Since then, Tiwadewala had been absconding.
