KATHMANDU, Oct 1: Police arrested over 24 Tibetan demonstrators from Hattisar area as they were demonstrating nearby the office of China Visa Section in the capital on Thursday. [break]
About 200 Tibetans who gathered at the place as commoners later staged demonstrations wearing T-Shirt that read ´Free Tibet´ slogans. Police arrested them after they started sloganeering.
Earlier in the morning, the police detained 30 Tibetans from different places in the capital including from Gaushala, Boudhha, Kamalpokhari, Sorhakhutte and Maitidevi to foil their protests. Some of them were released while some were put into custody.
The arrests come on the day China is celebrating 60 years of the rule of Communist Party of China´s on Thursday.
"Situation is tense at Boudda," a police official told myrepublica.com in the morning. The two arrested from Bouddha were carrying pamphlets calling for Tibetan independence from Chinese rule.
Tibetans in Kathmandu hold demonstrations and protests against the Chinese rule of Tibet timing it with different anniversaries. China insists Tibet is an integral part of China; Tibetans worldwide dispute this, saying China occupied Tibet in 1960.
Meanwhile, agencies reported that Tibetan exiles were also arrested in New Delhi. They held demonstrations, shouting "free Tibet" slogans. Some protestors managed to climb the wall of the Chinese Embassy compound in New Delhi.
