Three men charged under public offense act

SARLAHI, Jan 5: Police have charged three men in Rautahat under the Public Offence Act for allegedly torturing their wives and in-laws.



On the basis of a complaint lodged by Bhima Devi, a resident of Dhumariya VDC-8 in Rautahat, police arrested her husband Suresh Prasad Gupta and father-in-law Sonalal. The police will try the duo at the district court under the Public Offense Act. [break]



In another incident, police arrested Birendra Sahani of Gaur Municipality -7 after his wife Jhokhani Devi filed complaint against him for torturing her.



Sahani will also be tried at the court under the same Act, according to Rautaha police.



Police Inspector Hari Narayan Chaudhary said the accused have been remanded in custody for three days for further investigation.



“After the women complained of being physically, mentally and economically tortured by them, we arrested them and are taking necessary actions against them, added Chaudhary.



In her complaint, Bhima said her husband Suresh has been torturing her, demanding more dowries even though her parents had already provided Rs 150,000 along with other goods. She has also stated that she miscarried in 2005 due to physical abuse by her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law, among other family members.
