NEPALGUNJ, May 4: Former king Gyanendra Shah received a grand civic felicitation in Nepalgunj on Wednesday.
The civic felicitation ceremony was held at the Ram Leela Ground and was organized by the general public. At the event, a letter of felicitation was presented to former King Shah on behalf of one and a half dozen different social organizations of Nepalgunj. Former Queen Komal Shah, former Crown Princess Himani Shah, former Princess Prerana Shah and other members of the royal family participated in the civic felicitation ceremony.
Addressing the ceremony, former King Shah said that everyone should rise once to restore the old glory of the country - the institution of monarchy.
The former monarch expressed his sorrow over the fact that the situation of the country has not changed even for a long time. “I feel sad. Even after a long period of time, our condition has not changed. Let's improve the condition of the country, let's establish effective procedures and systems, let's provide happiness, peace and prosperity to the general public.”

He also said that politics in the country failed to be pro-people and pro-country.
“Democracy should have been from the people, to the people and for the people. But it’s an irony that the politics and the political system in our country have proved to be from the politicians, to the politicians and for the politicians or from the political parties, to the political parties and for the political parties,” he said.
Shah said that even though Nepalgunj is considered to be a big commercial hub and center which has access and linkages to not only the fertile areas like Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Surkhet, but also Kalikot, Jumla, Humla, Dhangadhi and Bhairahawa, it has not been able to achieve an all-round development at the desired speed.
“Considering the characteristic of the Nepali society to live together, the state has to play a profound role in the overall development of this region,” he said, “Nepalgunj needs to take a leap in terms of development through collaboration and cooperation among the different religions, castes and groups.”
He added, “By utilizing the available resources, Nepalgunj can play a role in developing all the underdeveloped areas of this region and can take a leading position to eliminate poverty. It is our hope that steps will be taken towards this end in the future.”
Tens of thousands of people from various walks of life including the general public were present at the civic felicitation of the former king.
