DIKTEL, Sept 1: Thirteen people are missing after a landslide struck Maheshwari-2 of Khotang district on Monday night. All but one of the missing are from two families. [break]
The missing have been identified as Ranadhwaj Karki, 66, his wife Mithumaya, 58, sons Amar, 28, and Ramesh, 14, daughters Tirthamaya, 16, and Rammaya, 40, and one-and-a-half years old granddaughter Kumari, according to Inspector Milan Bhattarai of District Police Office, Khotang.
One missing visitor, who was sleeping in the house, could not be identified.
Similarly, Purna Bahadur Kari, 34, his pregnant wife Shova, 26, and sons Rudra, 9, Man Bahadur, 6, and Hari Bahadur, 3, are also missing.
Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Ghimire said the landslide also swept away the empty house of Lav Bahadur Rai, located about 100 meters north of the Karkis´ house.
The incident site is about 22 km from district headquarters Diktel. An 11-member police team led by sub-inspector Dil Bahadur Danuwar left for the site at 8 a.m. Tuesday for rescue operation.
Ghimire said though the team sent from Diktel reached the site late, other teams from Solukhumhu and Aiselukharka of Diktel reached the site promptly.
“Even before our team reached there, 72 security personnel were already conducting rescue operation,” he said. “So far, they have recovered kitchen wares and floor mats.”
