Tenzing, Ripon share joint lead

KATHMANDU, March 30: Local teenager Tenzing Tshiring and Bangladeshi Mohammad Ripon of Bangladesh shared joint lead going into the final round of the Nepal Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Gokarna Golf Club, Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Tenzing, 15, scored two-under 70 on the second day for a total of one-over 145 while Ripon carded three-under 69 for a total of one-over 145.Overnight leader Sukra Bahadur Rai carded one-over 73 for a total of three-over 147. Bhutan's Dechen Ugyan, who carded the tournament best so far, his four-under 68 on Wednesday for a total of five-over 149.

Tanka Bahadur Karki and Tshendra Dorji of Bhutan are tied at nine-over 153. Tanka scored two-over 74 and Tshendra carded six-over 78.

Norbu Sherpa (74), Tashi Dong (77) and Shiva Kumar Majhi are tied at 10-over 154.

Ripon started the day with two straight pars as well of fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth hole. He was prized with an-eagle on third hole, then made birdie on sixth hole before dropping a shot on the ninth for two-under 34 on the front nine. On the back nine he made birdies on 11th and 13th holes against bogey on the 14th hole.

Tenzing played two-under 34 on the front nine and even-par 36 in the later half. He started with a birdie on the first hole, then dropped a shot on the third, made two more birdies on fourth and sixth holes for two-under 34. After taking the turn, he scored birdies on 12th and 14th holes but suffered a double-bogey on the 15th hole.

Sukra scored one-over 37 on the front and even-par 36 on the back nine. He carded lone birdie on the fifth hole against bogeys on second and ninth holes. On the back nine, he carded eagle on the 12th hole but dropped shots on 15th and 16th holes.

Dechen scored bogey-free three-under 33 on the first nine and one-under 35 on the later half. He carded birdies on the first, fourth and ninth holes. On the second nine, he scored birdies on 11th and 12th holes but made a double bogey on par-3 13th hole before adding another birdie on the last hole.

Altogether 30 players survived the cut out of 62 players for the final round scheduled for Thursday.

Bhutan wins Team event

Bhutan won the team event with the total of 302. Dechen Ugyan scored 81 and 64, and his teammate Tshendra Dorji added 75 and 78.

Overnight team event leader Bangladesh slipped to the second place with the total of 304. Mohammad Ripon scored 76 and 69 and Akabar Hossian 81 and 76. Nepal A comprising of Tanka Bahadur Karki and Tashi Tshiring finished third with 315.
