Media should keep citizens' voice at centre: Minister Timilsina

KATHMANDU, May 7: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Bikram Timilsina, has said that the media should work by keeping citizens' voices and social welfare at the centre, in the wake of rapid developments in information technology and the growing influence of digital media.



At a programme organised here today on the occasion of the 126th anniversary of the Gorkhapatra Sansthan, Minister Timilsina emphasized the need to meet citizens' expectations and maintain their trust in the media.


He underscored the need to make state-owned institutions more professional and responsible, and directed employees to work in a responsible manner and remain accountable for the greater interests of the institution.

The Communications Minister stressed that solution-oriented thinking and working style are necessary among employees.


He also called for the restructuring of the Gorkhapatra Sansthan. Recalling the long history of Gorkhapatra, Minister Timilsina said there have been extensive changes in the style, technology, and methods of journalism over time.


He pointed out the need for Gorkhapatra to seriously review how to make itself a unique, effective, and credible media outlet.


"Today is tomorrow's history. The good deeds done today will guide the future. So work in a way that makes the institution a place to be proud of," he instructed the employees.


On the occasion, Minister Timilsina unveiled a replica of the news pages in the Santhal and Hayu languages, which Gorkhapatra has started publishing from today.
