KATHMANDU, Aug 2: The long-standing conflict between the two student unions -- All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) and Nepal Student Union (NTU) - on Sunday took a nasty turn with a group of students attacking principal of Tri-Chandra College Hari Prasad Parajuli. [break]

A group of ANNFSU affiliated students allegedly attacked Parajuli after the police arrested two of their activists who were accused of the shoot-out at Tri-chandra College about a month ago. The incident took place when Parajuli was working at his make-shift desk in the account section at around 11 a.m.

Parajuli claimed that the attackers were students affiliated to ANNFSU, whom he could identify well. He, however, refused to name them. According to Parajuli, a group of ANNFSU-affiliated students had entered the office and surrounded his desk. Then they started to hurl chairs and record files without even exchanging a word, he claimed. "I was shocked,” he said, “As chairs were small I could shield my face with hands. Fortunately, I only sustained injuries on my nose and forehead."

Binaya Ram Bhatta, President of the Free Students Union (FSU) of the college, also claimed that it was the ANNFSU lot that vented its fury over the principal.

Meanwhile, president of ANNFSU Ram Kumari Jhankri denied involvement in the incident. “This is a false accusation. If they can accuse us of opening fire inside the college premises, it is not at all a surprise that they can accuse us of the attack on the principal."

Jhankri even challenged the government to prove their offense. "We will readily accept punishment if we are proved guilty," she added. Eye witnesses told Republica that a group of ANNFSU-affiliated students had entered Parajuli´s room after staging a rally to protest the arrest of two of their leaders.

Bamdev Gautam, Inspector at the Metropolitan Police Sector, Durbarmarg, however, said that the incident wasn´t worth much attention. “Students are learnt to have hit the principal with some soft-cover paper files. We had deployed a team to provide security to the principal throughout the day."

Principal Parajuli said he no longer felt safe to work at the college. He claimed that the police was reluctant to take the matter seriously.
