Chhath is regarded as the thanksgiving festival dedicated to the Sun god for bestowing the bounties of life in earth and fulfilling wishes.
The festival started from Friday formally ended today after arghas were offered to rising Sun on Monday morning.
According to tradition, Chhath is celebrated twice in a year — one in Kartik and for the second time in Chaitra.
People regardless of their caste and financial status thronged the bank of several rivers seeking blessings of the Sun god for prosperity. In several places in Tarai, people bathe on riverbanks and paid obeisance to the rising sun today.
Celebration of the festival has gone beyond ethnic lines. Over the past few years people of hill-origin started celebrating the festival only marked by Maithali-speaking communities otherwise.
“I celebrated Chhath wishing long life of my family members and social harmony,” said Radha Pandey, a local of Birgunj.
A large number of devotees thronged Ghadiarba of Birgunj to observe the festival with great fervor, said Ram Prasad Kanu, chairman of Chhath management committee.
Married women specially observed a fast and offered prayers standing waist-deep in water and offer fruits and flowers to the Sun.
