KATHMANDU, Nov 27: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has viewed that political interventions would increase at universities with a system appointing political figures as Chancellor.
In her address to the Senate of the Tribhuvan University on Wednesday, Prime Minister Karki stressed the need to close the door for unnecessary politicking by abolishing the system of having the Prime Minister as Chancellor in the universities.
"It was delayed to pass the annual policy and programme of the universities, which is not a good practice. Universities should be made free of politics," she opined.
Revised interest rate corridor system introduced
The Prime Minister emphasized that universities should be self-sufficient not only academically and administratively, but also the financial front.
Similarly, Minister for Education, Science and Technology and Pro-Chancellor of the TU, Mahabir Pun, shared that a discussion was underway with experts regarding the withdrawal of the provision having the Prime Minister as the chancellor of the universities through ordinance or other legal arrangements.
The Senate decided to restructure the academic and administrative aspects of the University in its policy and programme of the fiscal year 2082/83 BS.
The TU Senate was called on Wednesday to amend some laws, including the adoption of stalled policies and programmes.
