KATHMANDU, Nov 17: Members of the secretariat under the Special Committee and surveyors on Wednesday headed for the seven main cantonments to start the much-awaited categorization of over 19,000 Maoist combatants.

"We are expecting all the members and surveyors to reach the cantonments by Thursday morning," said Bala Nanda Sharma, coordinator of the secretariat, who is heading a team of 36 surveyors for the categorization at the Shaktikhor cantonment in Chitwan. [break]

Sharma said members of the secretariat have led surveyors in seven groups for the categorization that will begin from Friday if everything goes smoothly.

According to Sharma, 36 surveyors will carry out categorization at the cantonments in Chitwan and Kailali and a group 24 surveyors each will be working at the cantonments in Sindhuli and Illam.

Similarly, two groups of 32 surveyors have been assigned to the cantonments in Surkhet and Rolpa while 30 surveyors have been sent to the cantonment at Jhyaltungdanda.

Under the categorization process, the combatants will be separated into three groups-- rehabilitation, integration and voluntary retirement. The categorization will lead to the ultimate management of the Maoist combatants, who have been living in 28 separate cantonments, including seven main and 21 satellite cantonments.

The categorization will be done only in the main cantonments and the combatants of the satellite cantonments will have to come to their respective main cantonments.

Each group of surveyors is expected to categorize around 300 combatants per day, which means categorization of around 2,100 combatants per day.

Sharma said the secretariat plans to complete the categorization process in around ten days.
