SURKHET, Feb 28: No efforts have been made to bring a micro hydropower project back in operation for years, causing inconvenience to thousands of electricity consumers. [break]

The 20-kw Jhuprekhola Small Hydropower Project has remained closed for the past six years. The authorities concerned have not taken any initiative to repair the power house despite the passage of long time.

Local people say the power house is losing its charm day by day and fear that thieves may steal the physical infrastructures.

The seven-meter-long canal, built constructing an embankment in the river, is broken in some parts, according to locals. Vegetable farming has been done in the pond meant for collecting water, says Dilli Ram Acharya, a local resident.

The long closure of the power project has deprived thousands of villagers of half a dozen VDCs, including Jarbuta, Satakhani and Kalyan of electricity.
