In this context and to mark its formal establishment, Support Nepal, a non-governmental and non-political NGO, organized a cancer awareness program and free breast cancer screening at the International Club in Sanepa on September 18.[break]
Support Nepal was founded on August 11 with the initiative of people from several sectors such as media, medicine and business with the motive of spreading awareness among women from all over Nepal about various cancer-related issues and also to act as a support group for patients who suffer from such diseases as well as their families.
Dr Shushila Vaidhya, cancer specialist and board member of Support Nepal, gave demonstration for self-examination of breast and also did free screening for women present at the event.

She said, “Women should regularly get themselves checked because when they start realizing the symptoms, they are already in terminal stages.”
“Cancer not only affects the patient but their families also suffer equally. Therefore, those who have suffered should encourage and support the cancer patient and their families,” stated Karna Sakya, the noted social worker and businessman.
Screening breast cancer and cervical cancer is easy and affordable. Women can do their own self-examination once a month, and a simple lab test known as Pap Smear can be done to detect cervical cancer.
This initiative will indeed help in early detection of cancer in a country like Nepal where cervical cancer followed by breast cancer is the major cause of women’s untimely death.
