KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Subash Tamang hit a shot in one-under 71 to take the lead on the opening round of the CMS Faldo Series Nepal Championship at the Gokarna Golf Club on Monday.
KATHMANDU, Jan 8: The second best score of the day was by Surya Nepal Eastern Open champion and leading amateur Sukra Bahadur Rai, who carded two-over 74.
On the age category of boys’ 17-21, Bipin Tamang is distant second at eight-over 80 and Suman Nepal at nine-over 81.
Subash extends Faldo Series lead
On the age category of boys’ 12-16, Binod Tamang scored four-over 76. Sam Doubard and Ritesh Tamang carded seven-over 79.
In the girls’ category, Prativa Rai carded 13-over 85, Kashmira Shah is second at 17-over 89 and Juny Gurung is at 95.
Subash, 16, scored even-par 36 on the front nine, he made a bogey on the second hole but recovered with a birdie on the sixth. On the back nine, he made bogey on the 12th hole but came back with birdies on 15th and 16th holes for one-under 35.
Sukra, 20, who was struggling from fever, shot three-over 39 on the front nine, he made bogey on the opening hole and saved birdie on the third but bogey on the seventh and double-bogey on the eighth. On the back nine, he made birdies on 10th and 14th holes against bogey on the 17th for one-under 35.
Binod, 16, who had the third best card of the day scored two-over 38 on each side. On the front nine, he made a birdie on the third hole but suffered bogeys on first, seventh and eighth holes. On the back nine, he sank a birdie on the 12th hole but made bogey on 10th and double-bogey on the 15th.
The event, which is sponsored by the ISME Pvt Ltd, is organized by the Nepal Golf Association and Gokarna Forest Resort.
A total of 26 juniors from age 12-21 are taking part in the tournament played over 54-holes. The winner of each of those categories will earn places in the 13th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Faldo at Laguna Lăng Cô in Danang, Vietnam in March this year.
