SPORTS BRIEFS: Tandan elected president

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: The first annual general assembly of Nepal Weightlifting Association on Thursday unanimously elected a 16-member committee under the presidency of Ratna Kumar Tandan. Surendra Bahadur Hamal, Sunil Lal Hamal and Sitaram Maskey are the vice-presidents of the newly-elected committee.



Parthasarathi Sen Gupta is the general secretary while Tilak Bahadur Raut and Ishwar Bahadur Shrestha have been elected as secretary and treasurer respectively.[break]



Singh, Sthapit in quarterfinals
KATHMANDU: Ashok Singh of Nepal Police and Nirmal Sthapit from Central Region entered the men´s singles quarterfinals during the Fifth National Soft Tennis Tournament on Thursday.



In the other matches played at the APF court, Halchowk, Sohan Dhaubadel, Subodh Adhikari, Manoj Subba, Dipendra Shrestha and Dushyanta Thapa also entered the knockout round. Altogether 12 players, who advanced into the first round, were divided into two groups and a round robin league was conducted between them. The top four players of each group secured a place in the quarterfinals.


Rating chess from Sept 4
KATHMANDU: Jyapu Samaj is organizing the Jyapu Samaj Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament from September 4-9 at Chyasal. According to tournament coordinator Sanjkaji Maharjan, the tournament will be held until the 10th round in the Swiss League system and will be participated by about 100 players from across the country.



The tournament carries a total cash prize of Rs 65,000 with the top three players receiving Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 respectively. The best 19 players will also receive cash prizes. The tournament will also have veterans´ above 50 years category, women´s category, and rating from 1750 to 1850. The winners of all three categories will receive Rs 1,000 each. The expected cost of the event is Rs 250,000.


Khatri defeated in world c´ship
KATHMANDU: Phupu Lhamu Khatri was defeated in the preliminary round of the 28th Judo World Championships on Wednesday by Bulgarian judoka Elena Grigorova in the women´s U-57 kg weight category. Fifteen-year-old Khatri, playing in a senior international game for the fourth time, was in a defensive mode against the much experienced Bulgarian national champion.



According to the official website of the International Judo Federation, Grigorova pinned down Khatri within 26 seconds but Khatri fought her way back into the game. Grigorova scored half point (waza-ari) on 1 minutes 11 seconds and sealed the game scoring full point (ippon) 18 seconds later. Altogether 65 players had participated in the event held in Paris, France.
