SPORTS BRIEFS: SAG medalists feted

KATHMANDU, May 15: Newa Jagaran Suraksha Manch felicitated the medalists of the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) and foreign coaches in the capital on Saturday.



Youth and Sports Minister Ganesh Tiwari Nepali handed over letters of appreciation to the players. Likewise, judo players Kaluman Tamang and Ramesh Magar who were injured in a lift accident in Dhaka during the SAG received Rs 5,000 each. [break]



Nepal had bagged eight gold, nine silver and 20 bronze medals in the SAG.



Former taekwondo player and Olympian Sangina Baidya and marathon record holder in SAG Baikuntha Manandhar were also felicitated.





KU enter quarterfinals



KATHMANDU, May 15: Kathmandu University (KU) advanced into the quarterfinals of the men´s category during the Fifth Sprite Basketball Tournament.



KU thrashed Triton College 30-25 on Saturday to register berth in the last eight. Himadri Thapa scored 11 points for the winning side.



Likewise, Little Angels´ College defeated hosts Kathmandu College of Management (KCM) 23-17. Nabin Shrestha scored eight points for the winners.





Bista shines for Valley Public



KATHMANDU, May 15: Valley Public School earned third consecutive victory in the senior girls´ basketball category on Friday during the Second Angels Sports Festival.



Samikshan Bista´s high flying performances gave Valley Public a 21-7 win over hosts Angels´ Heart, a 21-2 victory over Elam Kids and another triumph of 23-9 over Bagmati School. Bista scored 17 against Angels´ and 11 against Elam. She scored 19 points in the match against Bagmati.



In the same category, Ganesh Secondary defeated Greenland 10-4 and TIA beat Mahendra Bhawan 24-6. Valley Public, Greenfield, AIA, Greenland and Angels´ Heart won their respective matches in junior boys´ basketball category.





Open National Volleyball from Monday



KATHMANDU, May 15: Open National Men´s Volleyball and Laxminarayan Shrestha Memorial Cup Open National Women´s Volleyball will kick off on Monday.



A press meet organized by hosts Jawalakhel Volleyball Coaching Club on Saturday informed that seven teams in men´s category and six in women´s are set to compete in the six-day event. The tournament will be held in league-cum-knockout format.



The teams in the men´s event are Army Club, Jawalakhel A and B, Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC), Nepal Police, Freedom Group and Lubhu. In the women´s section are New Diamond, Bright Future, Bijeshwari, Angels´ Heart, Jawalakhel and WMMC.



The top three teams in the men´s category will bag a purse of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 while the women´s teams will receive Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
