SPORTS BRIEFS: Rajbhandari continue with lead

KATHMANDU, Sept 2: Rijendra Rajbhandari of Kathmandu Chess Club continued with sole lead with 7.5 points after the completion of eighth round match in the Open Fide Rating Chess Championship being held in the capital. Rajan Puri held Rajbhandari to a draw Friday in the eighth round. Puri accepted Rajbhandari´s proposal to share point in the 27th move. Along with Puri, national champion Badrilal Nepali and Nabin Tandukar are jointly in the second spot with 6.5 points apiece. Nepali had a hard fought win over Bijay Dangol while Tandukar surrendered to Fide Master Manish Hamal in the 42nd move. Similarly, FIDE Master Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Surbir Lama and Niraj Niraula occupied third place jointly with six points. FIDE Master Hamal, Ganeshman Duwal of Bhaktapur and Prem Krishna Maharjan of have jointly scored 5.5 points each. Under unrated category, Nabin Kumar Chaudhary, Balaram Sanjel and Lekh Bahadur Thapa have scored 5 points each. The final or the ninth round match will be held at 11:00 am Saturday.



Saudi U-16 team in Kathmandu
KATHMANDU: A 41-member Saudi Arabia team arrived in Kathmandu Friday to participate in the Group A matches of AFC U-16 Championship to be held from September 12-20 in the capital. Nepal is pitted against Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Bangladesh, and Maldives in the group. The winner and the runner up of group will make it to final round of the match. Meanwhile, All Nepal Football Association Vice President Lalit Krishna Shrestha welcomed the team at the Tribhuvan International Airport.



Chyasal, Kathmandu victorious
KATHMANDU: Chyasal Youth Club and Kathmandu Club emerged victorious on Friday in the Martyrs´ Memorial Red Bull C Division League Football being held at Satdobato. Chyasal defeated Star Club 1-0 with a lone goal from Shankar Byanjankar. Byanjankar scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute. In another match, Kathmandu Club edged past Sano Gaucharan Youth Club 3-1. Sanjay Thapa netted twice in the 19th and 44th minute while Sajan Pradhan scored another in the 36th minute. Milan Magrati hit back the consolation for Sano Gaucharan in the 58th minute. On Saturday, Madhyapur Youth Association will play against Boys Sports Club while Mahabir Club will lock horns with Shree Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club.



KES boys, girls in final
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu English School (KES) entered the final of PABSON Mid-Western Basketball Tournament Friday in both boys´ and girls´ section being held in the capital. In the semifinal of both the sections, KES ousted Deneb school. KES outplayed 71-51 in the boys´ section and 17-13 in girls´ section. Subash Bhujel contributed 38 and Sakura Thapa seven points under boys´ and girls´ sections respectively for the winning side. In the boys´ final KES will meet Suryodaya which saw off New Summit 54-47. Roshan Thapa topscored with 29 points for Suryodaya. Similarly, New Summit will lock horns with KES in girls´ final. New Summit outplayed Hems 20-8 riding on 12 points of Laxmi Rana. The final will be held on Saturday.



Golden Gate off to flying start
KATHMANDU: Golden Gate International College made a flying start in the Second Bagmati Inter-college Basketball Tournament under boys´ section on Friday as both A and B teams of the college emerged victorious. Golden Gate A saw off Morgan 69-55 and B edged past Shivapuri College 37-32. Ajay Nepali contributed 18 points and Madan Bhandari nine for A and B teams respectively. Similarly, host Bagmati Modern College downed Little Angels´ 41-23 with 17 points from Rajesh Maharjan. Nawajeewan also won its match under boys´ section. Under the girls´ section, Morgan thrashed Nobel 23-8 and defending champion NASA saw off Reliance 16-10. Samichan Bista of Morgan netted 11 points and Rohini Limi scored nine points for NASA.



Korfball tournament from Sunday
KATHMANDU: The First National Korfball Tournament is scheduled to begin Sunday at LRI School´s court, Kalanki. Addressing to the press conference, the organizer LRI School Korfball Club on Friday stated that the three-day tournament will feature 12 teams. The winning team will be taken to Malaysia to participate in an international event. LRI, the main sponsor of the event will bear all the expenses of the tournament which is estimated to be Rs 180,000. A referee team led by Indian referee Ashok Kumar has arrived in Nepal to conduct the tournament.



Soaltee 9-hole Golf Saturday
KATHMANDU: Soaltee Crowne Plaza 9-Hole Open Golf Tournament will take place at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) Saturday. According to the organizers, altogether 120 golfers from RNGC, Gokarna Golf Club and Tribhuvan Army Officers´ Club will take part in the one-day event. The overall winner of the tournament will receive round trip open destination tickets for a couple from Qatar Airways apart from two night stay at the Intercontinental Doha and play golf at the Doha Golf Club. Meanwhile, Anthony Miley, Golf Operations Manager of Doha Golf Club with the help of RNGC pros, conducted a Golf Clinic Friday for the participants of the tournament.
