SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepali athletes out of W c'ship

KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Nepali athletes Tilak Ram Tharu and Chandrakala Thapa bowed out of the Athletics World Championships on Saturday.



Athletics coach Leela Shrestha said although Tharu finished third in the preliminary heats round of men´s 100m with a timing of 11 seconds, he couldn´t make it through the first round of the championship being held in Daegu, South Korea. [break]



Thapa was out of the preliminary heats round of women´s 100m after finishing fifth, clocking 13:17 seconds. "They couldn´t even match their own record because of the last-minute hassles that they faced while going for the championship. They couldn´t train properly because they had to make rounds of government offices after a row between sports officials that made their visit to Daegu uncertain," said the coach.



Sunuwar wins vertical kilometer race
KATHMANDU: Bed Bahadur Sunuwar won the title of the First Shivapuri Vertical Kilometer Trail Running Race in the men´s category on Saturday with a timing of 1 hour 14 minutes 50 seconds. Hom Lal Shrestha was five seconds behind the winner to claim the second position in the race held in the Shivapuri National Park. Hom Raj Rai finished third clocking 1:59:14. In the women´s section, Yangdi Lama Sherpa won the title with a timing of 1:43:50. Manika Rai (1:54:59) and Frances Fox (1:59:14) finished second and third respectively. The top three winners in both categories received Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Despite the second place finish in the men´s category, Shrestha was the first to reach the top of the hill while Lama was first in the women´s section.



PABSON basketball from Monday
KATHMANDU: Second PABSON Mid Regional Basketball Cup is set to kick off in the capital on Monday. A press release issued by PABSON Mid Regional Committee, Kathmandu on Saturday states that the tournament is being organized with the view to expose the hidden talent of students of this region. Altogether 12 teams in the boys´ category and eight in the girls´ category will compete in the six-day event.
