SPORTS BRIEFS: Double delight for Valley Public

KATHMANDU, Nov 20: The girls´ team of Valley Public won two matches in the Eighth Akira TIA Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Saturday.



Valley Public defeated Bagmati 40-13 and the hosts Trungram International Academy (TIA) ´B´ 17-8, respectively. Samichhin Bista netted 18 and 6 points against Bagmati and TIA ´B´, respectively.[break]



TIA ´A´ hammered Angels´ Heart 32-6, riding on 10 points from Anusha Malla.



In the boys´ category, Angels´ Heart outplayed Bagmati 35-12. Thum Paija scored 16 points for the winning team. Bijay Lama contributed 20 points as Valley Public saw off TIA ´B´ 42-24.



In other matches, Greenland had a narrow 40-37 win over Malpi, and New Summit beat Gyan Niketan 50-28. Manish Shrestha scored 15 points for Greenland and Devendra Rana scored 34 points against Gyan Niketan.



U-14 defeated in quarterfinal



Nepali national U-14 team on Saturday were handed a shock 2-1 quarterfinal defeat by Mizorom in the Subroto Mukharjee Cup Football Tournament being held in New Delhi, India. Nabin Gurung scored the only goal for Nepali side. Nepal is participating in the tournament through the Takshashila Academy.



Both teams of hosts in final



Both the girls´ and junior boys´ team of hosts Teresa Academy on Saturday advanced into the final of the Second Teresa Inter-school Basketball Tournament winning their respective matches. Under the girls´ section, Teresa hammered Kantipur 23-5 riding on five points of Alisha KC. Teresa will clash with the defending champion NIMS in the final. Wilson and Teresa will exchange blows for the title on Sunday under junior boys section. In the first semifinal, the hosts upset the defending champion Unique School 47-23. Sudip Thapamagar contributed 32 points for the wining squad.



In another semifinal, Wilson beat Deneb 41-25. Dhiren scored 16 points for Wilson.


Asian karate from Dec 2



Third Asian Goju-ryo Karate Championship will kick off from December 2 in Kathmandu. The three-day long event is scheduled to be held at the covered hall of Dasrath Stadium, the organizer Nepal Goju-ryo Karate-Do Association made the announcement amidst a press conference at its office on Saturday. According to BR Mitra, the general secretary and chief coach of the association, karateka from about 14 nations will compete in the tournament. Men and Women karetekas´ in senior, junior and cadet group will compete in 38 different categories. Meanwhile, Asian Goju-Ryo Karate seminar will also be organized on the occasion.


Rato Bangala escape Malpi scare



Hosts Rato Bangla made a narrow escape in the Inter-college A-level Boys´ Basketball Tournament played at its home court on Saturday. Rato Bangla beat Malpi 28-26. Norbu Lama´s 15 points couldn´t rescue Malpi. Rato Bangla made a dramatic 11-0 comeback in the third quarter after going down 4-10 in the first. Their scores in the second and fourth quarter was 6-5, 7-11.



Prabir Maharjan contributed 10 points for the winning squad. Likewise, riding on 19 points of Nischal Sodemba, KISC hammered Vhrishpati 41-14. Shangay Paul of Vhrishpati contributed seven points. Ullens thrashed Rupy´s School 54-23. Me Bhatta added 14 points for Ullens. Similarly, British School got a walk-over from Xaviers´ College.
