KATHMANDU, Feb 24: ‘Spectrum’, a solo exhibition of photographs by American photographer Laurence Kent Jones is underway at the premises of Siddhartha Art Gallery, Babarmahal since February 6.

The month-long exhibition has been showcasing 18 different photographs mostly taken in infrared, with stitched panoramas. “Infrared has made it possible to see the world differently, the same things, but with a twist. Sometimes it gives you a surreal otherworldly quality, and yet the pictures are fully recognizable as things we know. Sometimes familiar things can become original. I've really enjoyed my journey into the spectrum, only a little bit beyond the familiar colors of our world,” shared Jones about his photograph technique.

He added, “The panoramas, infrared and color, are also technical, assembled or ‘stitched’ in the computer from multiple overlapping images. I found that I could use the technique to get a bigger picture in sense of more complete meaning, and that I could shoot wide without the distortion brought by very wide angle lenses. When I shoot infrared and panoramic, I call the picture ‘double technical’.”

‘Bell’, ‘Boudhanath under Repair’, ‘Paro Valley, Bhutan’, ‘Lodi Garden, India’ and others photos kept at the exhibit have been taken are under the ‘double technical’ technique. Jones had traveled crossway to Nepal, India and Bhutan and it took him about two-and-half years to collect the 18 photographs.

“‘Boudhanath under Repair’ is the oldest among 18 photos in this exhibition,” said Jones. It was taken two-and-half years back during the reconstruction of Boudhanath Stupa.

The exhibition is slated to continue till March 6.
