Suraj was from Nakhu VDC- 1 and Jai Bahadur from Pakha VDC- 4 in Kalikot district. Jai Mal was a resident of Pakha VDC-4 and Dalu of Jale VDC-7 in Kalikot. Lal Bahadur was from Mohamadpur VDC -9 of Bardiya district.

Besides the five, 52-year old Bhyane Bika also died in the disaster in Kedarnath. He was from Thirthiya VDC -6 of Kalikot district. His body has been taken to his native place by his family members.

“We have confirmed reports of the deaths of six Nepalis,” Surya Vikram Shahi, president of GDF, told Republica over phone. GDF is helping with rescue and relief work in the disaster-hit state.

Meanwhile, one Jai Bahadur 58 also from Kalikot district of Nepal walked for five days from Kedarnath area and reached Dehradun on Saturday to make a miraculous escape.

Family head of Jai and Suraj, Karbeere Kaami, reached Dehradun few days ago to look for his missing family members. His 12 family members are now safe in Dehradun. While Suraj was Kaami´s son, Jai Bahadur was his son-in-law. Kaami along with his 12 family members is currently at Jain Dharamsala, Dehradun.

“GDF is helping them with food, shelter and other support,” Shahi said

Some 100 Nepalese are said to be still missing in the Badrinath-Kedarnath areas. The figure includes some 50 pilgrims and 50 laborers, the Nepal embassy in New Delhi said.

“As per our list of missing and the information given to us by some of the rescued so far, the approximate number of missing Nepalis is about 100,” said acting Nepali envoy to India Thirtha Raj Wagle.

Approximately 900 Nepalis have been rescued so far. Of those rescued, some 400 were pilgrims and another 500 local laborers.

From 14 to 17 June, Indian state of Uttarakhand and adjoining areas received heavy rainfall, which was about 375 per cent more than the benchmark rainfall during a normal monsoon. This caused the melting of Chorabari Glacier at the height of 3800 meters, and eruption of the Mandakini River which led to heavy floods near Kedar Dome in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Western Nepal.

The upper Himalayan territories are full of forests and have snow-covered mountains. They are home to several major and historic Hindu and Sikh pilgrimages, tourist spots and trekking trails. Heavy rainfall for four consecutive days as well as melting snow aggravated the floods.

Warnings by the India Meteorological Department predicting heavy rains were not taken heed of, causing huge loss of life and property. In the city of Dehradun, capital of Uttarakhand, this is said to be the wettest monsoon in over five decades.
