Death toll of Nepalis in Uttarakhand accident reaches nine

KATHMANDU, April 10: The death toll of Nepalis in an accident yesterday in India’s Uttarakhand State has reached nine. The accident happened when a vehicle veered off the road and fell into a gorge 150 feet deep on Tuesday near Betalghat, in Uttarakhand's Nainital District of India.

KATHMANDU, April 10: The death toll of Nepalis in an accident yesterday in India’s Uttarakhand State has reached nine. The accident happened when a vehicle veered off the road and fell into a gorge 150 feet deep on Tuesday near Betalghat, in Uttarakhand's Nainital District of India.


Shrawan Kumar Pokharel, the Chief District Officer of Banke, stated that the accident claimed the lives of people from Banke and Bardiya districts, bringing the number of Nepali fatalities in the accident to nine.

Pokharel reported the deaths of 60-year-old Tok Bahadur Chepang from Babai and 40-year-old Ramesh Chand from Betalghat. Additionally, the accident injured 36-year-old Dasharath Tharu of Baijnath-8 who is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.


The jeep accident took the lives of seven individuals from Baijnath Rural Municipality-8 of Banke, including a couple.


Bhagan Tharu, the ward chairman of Baijnath-8, identified the deceased couple as 46-year-old Ramdhiraj Tharu and his 45-year-old wife Lauti Tharu, residents of Baijnath Rural Municipality-8 Fattepur. The accident also claimed the lives of other residents from the same municipality identified as  56-year-old Udayaram Tharu, 58-year-old Bishram Tharu, 42-year-old Atram Tharu, 42-year-old Binod Kumar Tharu and 51-year-old Tilakram Tharu.


The passengers were on their journey back home when the accident occurred.
