On July 20, the six – Sher Bahadur Chaudhary (planning commander), Sita Ram Chaudhary, Naresh Chaudhary, Khusi Ram Chaudhary, Rohit Chaudhary and Jaya Lal Chaudhary -- were detained for their alleged link with Al-Qaeda from separate places in the district, said Uttam Bahadur Singh, chief at the District Police Office, Kailali.
He said they had written letters to people in a letter head bearing the name “Nepal Al Qaeda Association World Terrorism (NAQAWT)”.
On the initiation of Dr. Aslam Khan, an Indian national belonging to Muslim community, NAQAWT was established six years ago, Singh said, quoting the statement of one of the arrestees.
“There needs a thorough and wide investigation if they have a link with Al-Qaeda. But since the arrestees belong to Chaudhary community, they might have extorted people in the name of Qaeda with a greed to earn money in a short time,” Singh added.
