KATHMANDU, Sep 25: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday issued an interim order against the government, ordering it not to carry out any activities except for clearing hurdles in relation to implementation of Nepal Vehicle Emission Standard (NVES) 2012, standards equivalent to Euro III for control of air pollution.

A division bench of justices Girish Chandra Lal and Gyanendra Bahadur Karki issued the order, acting on the write petition filed by Jivan Kumar Pokhrel on September 6.[break]

Last month, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) had unveiled the NVES 2012 that also aimed at gradually phasing out Euro I and II standard vehicles to control air pollution.

A recent study shows 60 percent of air pollution in the capital is contributed by vehicles. Of a total of 1.2 million vehicles in Nepal, 800,000 are registered in Bagmati zone.
