KATHMANDU, Sept 30: The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday issued a show cause notice over the ongoing prime ministerial election.

Responding to a writ petition filed against the CPN-UML´s decision to stay neutral in voting for a new prime minister, a single bench of SC Justice Tahir Ali Ansari asked defendants to furnish written clarifications within seven days. [break]

Giving high priority to the case filed by lawyers including Chandra Kanta Gyawali, the SC also drew the attention of the authorities to why they have been holding futile prime ministerial elections.

"The bench hereby orders officials to draw the defendants´ attention to look into the sprit of the interim constitution and also act as per constitutional provisions while holding the PM election", states the order.

Senior Advocate Laxmi Nirala, constitutional lawyer Madhav Basnet and lawyer Bal Krishna Neupane pleaded for the writ petitioners.

The petitioners demanded a new process for electing the PM.
