Sabjimandi of Bhansar Road in Dhangadhi is the hub for selling such dead chickens. “Traders mix dead chicken illegally brought from various neighboring Indian cities with fresh meat before selling in the local market,” said a source.
Local shopkeepers are selling dressed chicken at Rs 240 a kg, up from Rs 130 a kg at which they purchase these chickens in the Indian market.
Gopal Ayer who is selling Indian chickens from his store claimed that he brought them from a poultry farm at Jugeda of Dhangadi which is close to Indian towns Suda and Sariyapur where chickens in large number were reported to have died of different diseases.
However, he denied to disclose the name of the farm that sold him these chickens.
Kailash Kumar Bajimaya, chief district officer of Kailali, said local administration has the information about the illegal entry and rampant sale of unhealthy chickens in the local market.
“We will take action against those found involved in the illegal import and sale of dead and unhygienic chickens in the market, said Bajimaya.
