BIRATNAGAR, May 21: Amid government preparations to close down the regional offices of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights-Nepal (OHCHR-N) in various parts of the country, thirteen rights groups have urged the government not to do so.

Terming that the peace process has yet to come to the positive end, they also demanded extension of OHCHR´s term ensuring same mandates as it has been enjoying for the last few years. "The government shouldn´t shut down OHCHR´s regional offices as the human rights situation is ever deteriorating in the country," they said.

The groups submitted a memorandum to the government to this effect through District Administration Office Morang on Thursday.

Those submitting the memorandum include Insec, Worec, Human Rights Alliance, Human Rights Organization of Nepal, Jagaran Nepal, Nepal Bar Association, Advocacy Forum, RIDEC Nepal, COCAP, NGO Federation, Integrated Campaign, FOREN and Peace Society.

"The role of OHCHR is ever relevant at present as the various provisions of Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) are not sincerely implemented and the formation of Truth and Reconciliation and Disappearance Commission yet to be constituted," reads the memorandum.
