POKHARA, Oct 19: Authorities raided various natural and alternative medication centers in Pokhara that were operated by people without any formal medical education.

The police detained two out of the 10 who were rounded up for practicing allegedly without any formal certificate. Bishnu Chapagain and Surya Bahadur Gurung will be presented at District Administration Office, while others have been released after interrogation. [break]

Chapagain was running Aarogya Dham Help Center for the last 15 years and Gurung operated Global Center for Positive Health. The police found huge pile of visiting cards of fake doctors and books on different kinds of healing from the two medical centers.

Under the relevant law, a person found performing medical practice with fake identifications can be jailed for a year and fined Rs 50,000 to Rs 10,00,00.

“Chapagain and Gurung were handed over to the District Administrative Office as the malpractices at their centers were found to be severe than at other centers,” said Antar Bahadur Silwal, Administrative Officer at the DAO. Silwal was present during the raids at all of the 10 clinics, hospitals and medical centers. “Besides the two, all others were found of not committing any serious malpractice,” said Silwal.

Meanwhile, one of the doctors Sunil Poudel slammed the police for arresting him without any warrants and wrongly accusing him of operating without medical certificate. He said that police didn´t spare him even after he showed them his real certifications and other legal documents.

“I had submitted a clarification note stating the reasons for writing doctor before my name, but they didn´t take my reasons seriously,” blamed Poudel.

“I have my bachelor degree in Naturopathy and Yogic Science and I am the first person to study the subject in Nepal,” claimed Poudel.

Just as the tradition medical science studies, Naturopathy is also a five-and-half-year program which has been recognized by the Tribhuvan University.

According to Nepal government law, in order to run alternative medical treatment clinics and hospitals, they should be registered at Department of Ayurveda. So far, only seven medical centers have received authorization to operate such centers in the country.
