Q&A with Roshan Rathi

Dear Sir,

I'm a BBA graduate, but I've been working as a reporter in a magazine for about a year now. Apart from the creative freedom I've been given, my workplace also has some cool people and nice work atmosphere. However, I don't have a good salary. On top of that, every writer/journalist I meet suggests me to not pursue a career in media. I had never planned to stay in this profession for long, but I'm not ready to leave just yet. Except that I fear that if I do stay longer, I'll be stuck here forever. Should I start preparing to leave or can I stay for a while longer?
--AnonymousAt this stage of career, learning opportunity and career growth are what you must seek for. The freedom to be creative in your current job gives you ample of learning opportunities which in turn fosters professional growth. Likewise, an organization's work culture and good colleagues add a lot of value in your professional growth, too.

Yes, not having a good salary can be disappointing, but it's important for you to realize that not being paid "well" as a fresher is absolutely fine, as long as you're learning new things every day. Many fresh graduates spend months in internships where they aren't even paid a single paisa. So take your current position as an on-the-job training and then salary wouldn't matter much to you.

Don't focus too much on people's opinions. Every profession comes with its own set of challenges. Plus, there are many journalists who lead an above average life, are recognized and respected, and are financially strong, too. Journalism is one of the best careers for creative people; it's one of those rare professions in which you can constantly explore yourself, expand your network, and build opportunities for yourself, while at the same time inspire change in the society, nation and world at large.

So I'd advise you to continue working in the magazine for now, at least until you have a better opportunity on hand. I'm not sure what magazine you're working for, but given your educational background, maybe business reporting would be best for you. Even if you have plans to become a banker, or start your own business someday, journalism is a good platform to get to know people who might help you realize your dreams someday.

All the best.
